This winter, they'll fly somewhere else

Winter is when Malta needs visitors most. And winter is when our rivals make it cheapest to visit.

Full caption
The tourist tax alone, for a couple spending a week in a holiday apartment this winter: Malta 2027: €140 Dubrovnik: €26 Crete or Rhodes: €14 Mallorca or Ibiza: €8 Cyprus: €0 Greece, Croatia and the Balearics all cut their tourist tax in the low season. From January, Malta will charge the full €10 per adult, every night of the year: 10 times Greece and 18 times Mallorca. Same winter sun. Same short flights. A much smaller bill somewhere else. When a family compares holidays, they don't see a budget measure. They see a total price. Every couple that books Crete or Cyprus instead is a week of work lost for our cleaners, drivers, restaurants and shops. That's why we are proposing a seasonal rate: €7 in summer, €3 in winter. Share this before the winter bookings are lost. #Budget2027 #VisitMalta #WinterSun #EcoContribution #ShortLetsMalta #STRMalta Sources: Malta Budget 2027 – Malta Daily · Greece short-let climate levy – APTax · Croatia tourist tax 2026 – Croatia Atlas · Balearic ITS rates – BookCheckin · Cyprus – Cyprus Consult

When the lights go out – Facebook post graphic

When the lights go out

Behind every short let is a person who goes to work because a guest is coming.

Full caption
The cleaner who prepares the rooms at dawn. The laundry that washes the linen. The plumber, the electrician and the painter. The driver at the airport, the waiter in the village square, the grocer on the corner, the skipper of the boat trip. Behind every licence is also a family: savings built over a lifetime, a bank loan that still has to be paid, an old townhouse or Gozo farmhouse restored instead of left to crumble. When the guests stop coming, none of this disappears overnight. It fades, quietly. Shutters stay closed. Streets go silent in winter. Small businesses that have served Malta for generations close their doors. Every empty night is someone's lost day of work. We are asking for a fair, seasonal eco-contribution, so that Malta stays open, affordable and welcoming. Share this for the people who keep our islands running. #Budget2027 #MaltaJobs #Gozo #ShortLetsMalta #STRMalta #SupportLocal Sources: Malta Budget 2027 – Malta Daily · MHRA reaction – Business Now

Jobs and investment

It's not just owners who will pay.

Full caption
Malta and Gozo have 8,748 licensed short lets, 1,612 of them in Gozo. Nearly half of all tourist nights are spent outside hotels. Every booking keeps people working: cleaners and housekeepers, laundries, maintenance workers and tradesmen, property managers, restaurants and cafés, taxis and car hire, local shops, boat and tour operators. Behind every licence is a local family's savings, a bank loan or a pension plan. Higher tax → fewer bookings → lost work → frozen investment. Tag a local business that depends on short-let guests. #Budget2027 #MaltaJobs #Gozo #ShortLetsMalta #STRMalta Sources: The Shift News – licensed short lets tabled in Parliament · Deloitte/MHRA Hotel Survey 2025

Government vs owner – Facebook post graphic

Government vs owner

Property owners, read this.

Full caption
From 2027, the government will earn more from your property than you do. On a €100 night with two guests: - Government: €42.00 (VAT €7 + income tax €15 + eco tax €20) - Booking platform: €19.40 - Property manager: €12.50 - Sundry costs: €5.00 - You, the owner: €41.10 And your €41.10 still has to cover the mortgage, repairs, furniture, utilities, licence fees and every empty night. You take the risk. The state takes the biggest share. Share this with every owner you know. #Budget2027 #PropertyOwnersMalta #ShortLetsMalta #EcoContribution #STRMalta

Winter week example – Facebook post graphic

Winter week example

In winter, the eco tax can add 75% to the rent.

Full caption
From 2027, every adult guest in a holiday apartment pays €10 a night on top of the rent, all year round. In the low season, when rates are at their lowest, the tax comes close to the price of the accommodation itself. Our proposed €3 winter rate would cut that by 70%, so the eco tax adds 23% to the rent instead of 75%, and Malta stays affordable when we need visitors most. Would you still book Malta in winter? #Budget2027 #EcoContribution #WinterInMalta #ShortLetsMalta #STRMalta

Our proposal: seasonal rates – Facebook post graphic

Our proposal: seasonal rates

A fairer way: seasonal rates.

Full caption
Instead of a flat €10 a night all year, STR Malta proposes: - Summer (April – October): €7 per adult, per night - Winter (November – March): €3 per adult, per night Why seasonal? - It helps fill the quiet months and supports year-round tourism and jobs. - It keeps Malta competitive. Greece already charges by season: €8 in summer, €2 in winter. - Peak-season visitors still contribute most, when pressure on infrastructure is highest. Do you agree? What we are asking for – Facebook post graphic

What we are asking for

Our position on Budget 2027.

Full caption
1. Equal treatment: one rate for every tourist bed. Short lets should not pay more than hotels. 2. Every euro accounted for: eco-contribution revenue ring-fenced for visible tourism infrastructure. 3. A seat at the table: consult licensed operators before the legal notice is issued. 4. Clear transition rules: certainty for bookings already confirmed for 2027. We support investment in Malta's tourism product. We ask that it is fair, transparent and planned with the sector. #Budget2027 #STRMalta #ShortLetsMalta #MaltaTourism
